- Tsuga belongs to the pine family. These are usually gigantic evergreen trees with graceful
drooping foliage and small brown cones, which hang down from the branches.
- They are native to North America and Asia.
- The Japanese name for the hemlock, suga, is the basis for the Latin name Tsuga.
- The wood is soft and therefore has little economic value, athough used to make many different items such as masks,spoons,spears, as well as furniture and mouldings,and construction.
- Hemlock bark yields tannin, which is used in tanning hides,and the pitch was used for waterproofing baskets and sun protection.
- Some First nations of B.C. Canada used the sweet inner bark as staple food, and for medicinal washes.
- The soft fragrant boughs were used for bedding.
- It was also used as a disinfectant and deodoriser, and as camoflage for temporary shelters.
